The eponymous oil is extracted from the eucalyptus tree, which is native to subtropical regions of Australia, Tasmania, and Indonesia. In total, there are over 600 different eucalyptus species. However, Blue Eucalyptus is primarily used as a medicinal plant. The eucalyptus tree is also a true survivor: it regrows quite quickly after felling.
Eucalyptus oil is primarily known for its refreshing effect. In earlier times, it was already used as a disinfectant and in wound treatment due to its antiseptic properties. Today, the dried leaves of older eucalyptus trees and the essential oil extracted from fresh leaves and twig tips are used as a herbal medicine.
The ingredients, such as essential oils, tannins, and bitter substances, are disinfectant, antiseptic, and also blood sugar lowering. The oil, in particular, is often processed into cough and cold remedies such as lozenges, ointments, capsules, or inhalation products.
Due to high demand, there are also eucalyptus oils that do not exclusively contain natural ingredients. However, these cannot subsequently achieve the same effect as real eucalyptus oil.
